Chapter Fourteen

Bev assembled the moving box then flipped it over and applied packing tape from a large handheld dispenser. She’d gotten rather good at it with all of the experience lately. The problem was, no matter how many boxes she’d assembled she’d barely made a dent in a lifetime of accumulation.

It wasn’t just her own things that she needed to make decisions about now. She still had some of her husband’s things and the things that had passed down in both of their families. She was keeping those boxes separate. For the most part, she planned to let Justin deal with them. She had no idea what he would consider important and she didn’t want to be the one who made the call. Best to let him play his own game of pitch or keep.

She lifted a bag from a shelf in the garage. Inside there was part of a vintage silver-plated tableware set. She’d grown tired of trying to keep it polished very early on in her first marriage. After the final cleaning, she’d wrapped the pieces in some sort of flannel cloths. She was surprised to find that they still looked fairly good. She was putting them into the box next to her when she heard the doorbell.

“You saved me,” Bev said when she opened the door to Megan.

Megan wrinkled her nose. “Packing isn’t fun, is it?”

“You have no idea.” Bev waved her in and led her back to the garage. “What brings you by?”

Megan looked around at the chaos of full boxes, empty boxes, and piles of things that Bev still needed to go through. “I’m trying to learn more about Jay Sutton.”

“I still can’t believe that,” Bev said with a shake of her head as she took another roll of flannel cloth from the bag she’d found.

“Did you know him well?” Megan asked.

Bev unrolled the flannel and held up an ornate serving spoon.

“Pretty,” Megan said.

“But difficult to keep clean.” Bev rolled it back up and put the whole bundle into the box next to her. “I honestly don’t remember seeing Jay since high school.”

Megan glanced into the box next to her. It held three sets of ice skates, two adult and one child-size. She assumed the black ones belonged to Justin and his father. The white ones must have been Bev’s.

“What about school? What do you remember about him then?” Megan asked.

Bev held up a small table lamp. The base had two parakeets. The shade was covered in tulle. She shook her head. The lamp went into the box.

“As you know, I ended up majoring in science. That was the subject that I taught and I was interested in it as a girl.”

Megan nodded to show she was following.

“Jay was also interested in science.” Bev turned to her again briefly. “We had a lot of classes together.”

“Did you talk to him a lot?” Megan asked.

Bev made a face. “Probably. I can’t say that I remember now.” She transferred more items from the shelf to the box. “I do remember the time he won the science fair.
